Absolutely Incredible Kid Day   . . . Details

Details

Lenten family note: A love note can be a spiritual practice or playful or of service. Family Circle's March 2013 issue mentioned that in 1995, the leaders at nonprofit Camp Fire USA established Absolutely Incredible Kid Day ® (AIKD) on the third Thursday in March. It's an annual day designated to honor our nation's children. The goal: to get parents to write their child (of any age) an esteem-boosting I-think-you're-awesome letter. Beyond your family, consider sending a letter to a friend's child or one in your neighborhood. Get in on the action without having to pick up a pen or use a stamp. Just send a "you-rock" text, Facebook message or Twitter on that day. Imagine the impact of loving letters in lunch boxes, on pillows, tucked in backpacks, or received in college mailboxes. Meaningful letters of encouragement and inspiration can be a wonderful habit for adults to do throughout the year. Join over 600 million people who have been exposed to this incredible annual campaign and Camp Fire USA’s message to America's Youth!

Top 10 Absolutely Incredible Kid Day Letter-Writing Tips

1. Set aside some time in a place where you can be undisturbed for 10 to 20 minutes.

2. Form a mental picture of the child and the things that you enjoy or appreciate about the child.

3. Getting started can be the toughest part. Try "Do you know what I like about you? I like it when you ..."

4. Be specific and be descriptive. Use humor. Don’t lecture.

5. Don’t worry about the length. A note can be cherished as much as an epistle.

6. Write it by hand. Feel free to make edits as you go. Don’t over edit.

7. You can mail it, put it in a lunch box, on a bed stand or read it to a child.

8. Don’t get nervous about acknowledgment. It’s all right to ask, "Did you get my letter to you?" Don’t push it with "Did you like it?"

9. Find time to write another letter. Make it a habit.

10. Write a letter now
